I was particularly struck by this statement in the audio commentary, "It is harder to make a warm, human, compassionate picture in color than it is in black and white."<br /><br />I haven't read anything on color theory, so I hope you will forgive me if I'm saying the obvious, but this is something I have struggled with, in slightly different form, for a while. I still shoot film, generally color slide film and B&W print film. Without the easy ability to manipulate color, I have noticed exactly what Mr. Manos stated, that it somehow seems “easier” to make appealing black and white pictures. At first I just thought it was because I was stuck in the cliché that “art” pictures are in black and white and that therefore my brain was somehow subliminally telling me that those pictures must be better, because they look more like ART.<br /><br />Then I noticed that I found a lot of color pictures appealing where the photographers had somehow “manipulated” the colors digitally, either by increasing saturation (admittedly not too many of those), decreasing saturation or somehow just making the colors different, provided it was done tastefully.<br /><br />Mr. Manos pointed out the difficulty with photography in his commentary: anyone can pick up a camera and become a photographer, so it is hard to tell a good picture, with thought and intent behind it, from a casual, lucky shot. I think that pictures that have color that is <span style="font-style: italic;">not</span> true-to-life (or don’t have any color at all) help to signal to us that whoever took the picture was trying to say something. This helps us look beyond the subject, or rather it helps us to put the subject and content of the picture in context.<br /><br />This problem seems particularly acute when looking at pictures I take of my everyday surroundings. Color slides of my neighborhood look too much like what I expect them to look like, so that I can’t get past the fact that it’s a picture of my street or my neighbor or that tree I pass on the way to work. Even if I had some sort of artistic intent when I took the picture, it just "looks" like a snapshot to me. The slide looks like a reasonable representation of whatever the subject of the picture is, so I only "see" the subject. If I take the same picture in black and white, I find that I focus on contrast, tonality, composition, all the things I was thinking of (or hoping for) when I took the picture.<br /><br />Does this mean that you can’t have an excellent picture with true-to-life colors? No, of course not. Does this mean that casual snapshots can’t be excellent pictures? No. Is intent necessary for art? I’m not heading down that road, at least not now.<br /><br />Still, I will point out that Mr. Manos’ use of large blocks of strong, saturated colors, while possibly true-to-life, also help to communicate to the viewer that these are intentional, artistic pictures.<br /><br />And excellent ones at that.

I noticed recently that <a href="http://www.truebluemusic.com/products.asp?dept=28">True Blue Music.com is having a big sale on a lot of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder "RVG" remasterings</a>.<br /><br />Many middle-period jazz recordings were halfway between studio and live records—a group of cats convened in a living room somewhwere, blew for a few days while the tape rolled, and the engineer and producer (sometimes, but not always, the same guy) picked the best cuts for an album. Van Gelder consistently gets ranked as one of the virtuosos of this type of record-making.<br /><br />True Blue Music is now letting a lot of these go on CD for ten bucks each. Another way of saying this is: a real aluminum CD with notes for what the download costs. Not a steal—but a deal.<br /><br /><a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/1600/art_blakey_moanin.0.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/200/art_blakey_moanin.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" /></a>To tell you the truth, despite the hype, I've never been all that impressed with the sound quality of the vaunted RVG remasterings for CD, although they're fine. They all seem just a bit on the thin side, like Van Gelder's monitors were a bit bloated in the bass and he was fighting that. But they're all of a consistent standard of "good or better," and let's face it, a lot of the music Rudy Van Gelder recorded is, and is always going to remain, one of the very best reasons to have ears.<br /><br />Art Blakey's <span style="font-style: italic;">Moanin'</span> deservedly makes all the "100 Essential" lists. You can take your pick of the Jackie MacLean and Hank Mobley offerings—there's nary a dog in the bunch. Just a few of the highest peaks above the clouds for me: Kenny Burrell's great popular favorite <span style="font-style: italic;">Midnight Blue</span>; Freddie Hubbard's wonderful <span style="font-style: italic;">Open Sesame</span> (and Tina Brooks' <span style="font-style: italic;">True Blue</span> with the same personnel—or mostly the same anyway—recorded just a few weeks later); Lee Morgan's <span style="font-style: italic;">The Gigolo</span> (abounding in Wayne Shorter, sizzle by Billy Higgins); and Eric Dolphy's <span style="font-style: italic;">Out to Lunch</span> (an even better bet—and better value—is Dolphy's excellent Prestige Profiles compilation downloadable on iTunes).<br /><br /><a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/1600/coolstruttin.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/320/coolstruttin.jpg" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" /></a>Absolutely not to be missed on the sale list (I would humbly propose each as a must-have not only for any jazz library, but any mature person's music library, period) are Horace Silver's <span style="font-style: italic;">Song for my Father</span> and Sonny Clark's <span style="font-style: italic;">Cool Struttin'</span>. <span style="font-style: italic;">Song for my Father</span> is as good a record as Miles Davis's <span style="font-style: italic;">Kind of Blue</span>. It definitely makes it to my desert island. <span style="font-style: italic;">Cool Struttin' </span>was never a great-sounding record, even on vinyl—sonically, that is—but the music is tops, and the RVG remaster is as good a version to have as any. Especially for ten bucks. Color Management—The Musical (Analogy)

by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ctein</span><br /><br />Some recent email correspondence raised an interesting (and not uncommon) misconception about what color management and profiling does for digital printmakers:<br /><br />"If [good color] truly has a 'psychological component' to it, then what looks good to one psycho may not look so good to the next. True? Then, custom tweaking, adjustment, and trial and error at the hands of an experienced human being beats the mathematical perfection [of printer profiling] any day."<br /><br />Which led me to the following informative (I think) analogy.<br /><br />Ever played a musical instrument? Consider, for the sake of discussion, anything with strings in it—guitar, piano, violin. Every instrument (at least, every make) has its own flavor and feel. If this were not the case, a lot of currently valuable instruments would cost a lot less! If you want to be a consummate master performer, you learn how to make your performance work with the unique characteristics of the instrument.<br /><br />You with me on this? Well, profiling is nothing more profound than tuning the strings on your instrument. It doesn't eliminate an instrument's unique flavor. It doesn't provide you any standard way to play a piece. But, after tuning, each note you play be as much on pitch as the instrument can make it.<br /><br /><a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/1600/Blog7Figure1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5406/570/400/Blog7Figure1.jpg" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><blockquote>On top you see what a printer does without profiling. The overall color balance is right, but the individual tones and colors are not. How much truer the bottom, profile-created print is. It has far fewer 'sour notes.'</blockquote></span><br /><br />It's still your responsibility to turn the score into a moving performance; it's always gonna be up to you to decide how the score should be interpreted and performed. Still, you'd rarely intentionally play on an out-of-tune instrument, right? That's what you're doing when you print on a poorly-profiled printer.<br /><br />Profiling doesn't replace human judgement with an algorithm, it only reduces the instrument's distortion of your judgement. Nothing more nor less. The nuances of the print are now more of your own making than imposed by the soulless hardware. That's what profiling your printer does for you.<br /><br />By the way, profiling is nowhere so important for monitors, so long as you're working by yourself (it's a must when working with others). A good profile makes the monitor more closely match the output, so you waste less time and materials allowing for 'windage,' but it doesn't actually change the print in any way. It makes life easier, but you can make your bestest prints without it.<br /><br />You can't without a good printer profile. Both a literary and visual feast, Faustina's photoblog can uplift and inspire.<br /><br /><br />3.<br />From the country to the city, we find photographer <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sebastian Shuster</span>, another Atlanta resident. Moody and methodic, Sebastian's style can be described as thoughtful, inward, and solitary, and his photoblog is appropriately called <a href="http://sull3n.org/pixelpost/index.php">Sull3n</a>.<br /><br />Sebastian discovered photography when shopping for a Christmas gift for his sister four years ago. He purchased a camera for her, and fell in love with it himself. Since then, and several cameras later, Sebastian has been exploring his world through images. He seeks out the quiet spots, unknown or over looked to many.<br /><br />"I photograph to learn, I enjoy the discovery process and learning how to see. My goal is to make what we see in our ordinary lives more beautiful. The hint at something greater just underneath; the feeling of being on the verge of a new discovery."<br /><br />And it's this emotive quality that sets Sebastian apart. His images, from the sloping landscapes to the pensive still lifes, are full of passion and feeling, and reflect the forethought and careful planning that goes into each and every photograph.<br /><br />Working in network operations for a large cell phone company, newlywed father of an energetic six year old, Sebastian hopes to one day be able to make a living through his Art.
