Go, Leica

I was rather surprised that the post below this one turned out to be controversial, with many people writing in public comments and in private to me in a somewhat scornful vein. Personally, I'm really glad there's an M8. To my way of thinking there are all kinds of good things about it. I won't try to list them all, but let me mention a few. One thing that has struck me about the Digital Age is that newcomers who are exclusively digital don't have the option of buying really old cameras and initiating themselves into some of the many methods of the past. I know that for me, exploring the available modes of expression was an education, not to mention a blast. I still have in my archives the results of my brief sorties into Kodachrome, cyanotype, and still life with studio lighting; a nice picture I took with a toy camera (which actually got published), and an 8x10 portrait; to say nothing of projects like dismantling and restoring a press camera. I have larger projects I undertook on 4x5 Polaroid P/N film and in medium format black-and-white using an Exakta 66. None of these were the way I ended up working, but they all contributed to my education and, I think, enhanced my connection to the photographers of the past, and their work. The other day I criticized Howard French for his juggling of many formats and methods, and among his responses was his admission that his "display work is overwhelmingly shot in black and white with the Rolleiflex." He added that he switches around "because I'm all about growth, and I don't like barriers." This latter is perfectly defensible; but for many older photographers the point would have been what he said in his first statement—experimentation made them familar with many ways of working, and they tended to hone in on what worked, and continued to develop and refine that, discarding the rest. (If they were Howard, in other words, they would have been grateful to find their own most natural technique and simply settled there.) Sometimes I reflect on what a shame it is that newcomers to photography will no longer have to learn how to keep a Hasselblad from freezing up, or choose between the competing options for developing sheet film streak- and mottle-free, or learn camera movements. It's not like we haven't gained a lot too, so I'm not moaning. I've said before that the camera itself was among my teachers in photography, and I still think so. It demanded a different way of looking, of responding, of appreciating the work of others—a different way of thinking. True, a lot of M8 buyers will use their fancy toys no differently than they would use a big DSLR or a Rolleiflex, but that's their loss. "Getting to grips" with an M Leica (the phrase is Andrew Mattheson's) was one of the pleasures of learning the old art, and was among its rewards. Personally, I'm glad the M8 is there to carry the M "way" into the new paradigm. That's one thing. Another is that I'm glad that a camera maker can be so inventive, so different, in a market that is turning out to be so disappointingly repetitive (or, as I used to spell it, "repetetititive"). Basically, the Canon T90 stamped its design DNA indelibly into everything that came after it, a style of device that my friend Bill Pierce dubbed "Wunderplastik." Wunderplastik and the point-and-shoot are overwhelmingly the style choices available in digital cameras, and every design outlier is a rebel to be valued. Maybe an M-style digital was just Leica's best choice, but still, there's no denying it's very different from the norm. When there's nothing but conformity abroad in the land, nonconformity is more, not less, crucial to vitality. I'm thankful that there are categories of cameras that don't accept zoom lenses. Again, being forced to work for at least a while with one or two single-focal length lenses is a teaching moment, an eye-opener, a dimension of one's growth in this art. I noted an item on Lyra Research the other day noting that "By late 2008 or early 2009, the cumulative number of camera phones shipped will surpass the cumulative number of both conventional and digital cameras shipped in the entire history of photography...." To which I responded with a big fat harrumph, thinking to myself, yeah, but what percentage of the work I care about will be done with them? Almost none, most likely. What matters to me is not that there's a camera in every home, not that the market for camera-type devices grows to the size of the market for toothbrushes, but that the few people who will be doing great photography have the tools that fit them, so they can do their work. They're there simply as decoration, to break up the "gray matter" of the text. Featured Comment by nextSibling: I mainly shoot sports and social events, and a bit of mediocre street photography, these days. Nothing that's ever likely to find its way to a gallery or make me a living, and that's how I like it. In the last couple of months I've used my Pentax DSLRs, an FM2n, an Olympus XA, an Olympus Stylus Epic, a Rolleiflex, a Fuji 6x8 rangefinder, spent (wasted) far too much time playing around in Photoshop, and processed a few rolls of 120 Tri-X in Diafine. What I've come to realise is that we're living in a golden age of photography. However one wants to pursue it. Someone like me with little talent and an unremarkable income can play around like this more easily and accessibly than ever before, just for the fun of of it and with no obligations. The web allows us to share our results, however unexciting, should we wish to, like never possible just a few years ago. It's all rather wonderful, whatever we do. Whenever the next interesting thing comes along, I'll be jumping on the bandwagon (DP-1, I'm looking at you). The only reason I don't have an M8 is the price tag.

Apropos April Fools

I used to be a teacher, and April Fool's Day was a fun day. One year I took two rolls of Tri-X, loaded them into a developing tank, and gave them a thorough soak in fixer. Then I waited until one of my students–one of the better ones–showed up all excited about a couple of rolls she'd just shot and wanted to see. I casually mentioned that I had film to develop too, and could she please just mix up a double batch of D-76 1+1? We stood there at the developing table (right, no sink) and processed our film together, chatting amiably. In between agitation cycles, when she wasn't looking, I switched tanks. When the film had finished washing and she went to hang hers up, there was a gasp, then a shriek, then "Oh, no! Something's wrong! They didn't turn out! I really wanted these pictures!" And so on. Meanwhile, I was quietly hanging up the film from the tank I'd finished. I casually said, "Well, there's certainly nothing wrong with mine. They turned out fine. Come and look." I had to suggest to her that she come look at "my" film about ten times before she actually did, and even then she had to look at half a dozen frames before it gradually dawned on her that "my" film was actually hers—at which point I cracked up—and she started repeatedly slugging me on the shoulder! No wonder the kids' nickname for me was "Mean Mike." Another nice one I remember, from high school: a bunch of guys from first period Physics snuck into the Physics homeroom late one afternoon and turned the teacher's big old wooden desk upside down. But being considerate, and meaning to not do any real harm, they first removed the drawers and carefully re-inserted them right-side up, so as not to scramble the contents. (They expected to be present when the teacher discovered the prank the next morning). But the teacher arrived at school early the next day and got a janitor to help him turn the desk right-side-up again. The pranksters just assumed they'd been foiled, until the teacher needed something in the middle of class and yanked open his top drawer.... Sorry to say I didn't have anything to do with that one. Thinking of playing pranks reminds me of one that wasn't actually a prank at all. I used to live in a walk-up apartment in Washington, D.C., and I had terrible trouble with a downstairs neighbor. Being a teacher, I had to get up early to be at school on time. The guy in the apartment beneath me, a lower-level functionary from the Turkish Embassy, would play his television really loudly until way late at night, making it impossible for me to get any sleep. We had all sorts of run-ins about this, but he was belligerent as all get-out, totally uncooperative. And even the police couldn't do anything, since he had diplomatic immunity. Finally I figured out what was happening: he wasn't ignoring me, exactly. Every night after dinner he'd start drinking hard liquor in front of the TV. After a few hours of this, he'd pass out, with the lights on and the TV blaring. That was why nothing I could do could in the way of banging on the floor or pounding on his door would wake him up again. One night, it was 4:00 a.m. and, with a mere two hours to go till the alarm went off, I still hadn't gotten a wink of sleep. In my desperation and sleep deprivation, a drastic solution occurred to me: I went down to the basement of the building, found the (ancient) electrical box, and unscrewed the fuses for his apartment. Perfect. He was passed out anyway, so the dark and the quiet didn't bother him. Then, as I was leaving the building the next morning at 7:30 or so, I went out through the basement and, on the way out, screwed the fuses back in. I figured I'd deal with the fallout later. As I passed his unit, I saw him through the window, stumbling around groggy and disoriented—because of course the lights and the TV had suddenly come back on, rudely awakening him to what I could only hope was a doozy of a hangover. Well, I fully expected that he'd be waiting for me that evening and that we'd have a real shouting match, or that there would be a padlock on his fusebox, or something. But no, nothing...nothing at all. Finally it dawned on me—he was clueless. Not only did he not know it was me, but he had no idea what had happened at all! So I did the same thing again the next night. It got to be a regular habit. I did the same thing every night from then on. If I had to get up in the morning and his television was blaring, I'd just wait till midnight or one or whenever I wanted to go to bed, go down and knock politely on his door to make sure he was passed out, then amble downstairs and unscrew his fuse before turning in, restoring his power again when I left the next day. This went on for the whole rest of the time he lived there—five or six months in all. And the beautiful thing was, he never did figure it out. I certainly never let on. What can I say? Glimpse apparently prefers not to be known, but has amassed an impressive amount of unusually fine work on flickr—I've returned to his page three times over the past few days, each time discovering more to look at. He practices a sort of street/travel/environmental photography in various cities around the world, and has a fine eye for honest documentary and found portraiture. You'll notice that he switches formats (35mm and medium format), cameras, and films, and mixes black-and-white and color. I normally find that photographers who do this create an obstacle for themselves that's difficult to overcome, with the technical inconsistency fracturing the integrity of the message. (It's difficult enough to create, and conform to, a consistent style in photographs.) While I still have some reservations about Glimpse's work in this respect—at least as it's presented on flickr—I think his vision survives the self-imposed handicap pretty well. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/aglimpseoftheworld/" target="_new">See what you think</a>. I don't know why my reportorial/researcher abilities abandon me whenever I get on flickr, but it's happened before. For some reason I seem to have a congenital lack of affinity for the flickr interface—the pictures are too small, navigation confuses me, and I never seem to know exactly what the heck I'm doing. I swear I looked for Glimpse's identity on flickr for 15 minutes before concluding that it just wasn't there, hence the title of this entry. What can I say? Write it off to my incompetence, I guess. </div></div>

Kodak Merger Announced

by Ctein The latest news to shake the photography world is yet another change in direction by Great Yellow Father and the announcement of a major corporate merger. It was just a few years ago that Kodak CEO Antonio Perez announced that for all intents and purposes film was dead and Kodak would be devoting its future energies to digital photography. In today's press release, Kodak announced that, in effect, digital photography was dead and the future was in telecommunications. "The up-and-coming generation of young image makers don't even use cameras. They use cell phones," Perez said. "They freely intermingle still images and video clips, sending them to their friends and posting them on-line. They don't even think about photography in the traditional sense. And they don't buy cameras and they don't get prints made. It's all going virtual. "Cameras and prints have always been our core business, whether based on film or digital image capture. If we're going to survive into the 22nd century, we have to move beyond photography. "Accordingly, today we announce our merger with AT&T. Both the Kodak and AT&T brand names will be subsumed into the new 'Telecom Photoimaging Corporation.'" The new company, which will trade as TPC on the NYSE, is wasting no time in beginning its marketing campaign.
