The Maine Photographic Workshops, now called simply "The Workshops," the Harvard of workshop programs in the U.S., is for sale.

"David Lyman, after 33 years as The Workshops’ founder, director and owner, has announced that he is simplifying his life. He intends to sell The Workshops and Rockport College, including the schools’ campus and other properties in Rockport, Maine. David hopes to remain active in an advisory role at The Workshops, but he wants more time for raising his new family and for his creative ventures: photography, writing, consulting, lecturing, and producing. David, who is 66, is proud of building two institutions that have inspired so many people. But at this stage of his life he thinks a sale of the schools will best ensure their continued growth and prosperity—as well as his own.

"This transition is currently underway. David is considering a number of options, including selling the schools to a larger educational institution, a nonprofit organization, or a benefactor who can acquire the schools, retire the bank debt, and provide the two schools with financial stability. His deadline for completing this transition is November 1, 2006.

"During this transitional time, The College and The Workshops will continue to operate much as they have been. The current staff will remain, helping David develop plans and the schedule of workshops for 2007."
